Choosing the Right Frames for a Shadowbox Effect

Shadowboxing is a framing technique that creates a 3D effect by distancing artwork from acrylic, ideal for items with depth. Recommended frames include classic for elegance, modern for minimalism, and wood for a natural look, with depth considerations for a secure display.

Understanding Shadowboxing

Shadowboxing is a framing technique that creates a three-dimensional effect by placing the artwork away from the acrylic or glass, allowing for depth and visual interest. This technique is particularly effective for objects that have depth like buttons, coins, patches, etc.

Recommended Frame Styles

When selecting frames for shadowboxes, consider the following styles:

  1. Classic Frames: These frames often feature ornate designs and can complement traditional watercolor artworks beautifully. They add an elegant touch, making them suitable for formal settings.

  2. Modern Frames: Sleek and minimalistic, modern frames work well with contemporary watercolor pieces. They allow the artwork to take center stage without distraction.

  3. Wood Frames: Wood frames provide a warm, natural look that pairs nicely with the organic qualities of watercolor paintings. They can be found in various finishes, from light to dark, allowing for customization based on the artwork's color palette.

Size Considerations

When creating a shadowbox effect, it is essential to choose the correct frame depth. For example, if you have an item that's 1/8" thick, ensure that the frame's rabbet depth is larger than that to accommodate the spacers required to keep the acrylic away from it, the thickness of that piece of acrylic or glass, and any backing materials used for support.

Frame Recommendations

Our recommended spacer depth is 1/4". With that in mind, consider the following frame options:

  • Standard Plus Three Profile 117: This collection features clean lines, durable aluminum, and a contemporary look, offering a gallery-quality finish for artists and photographers.

  • Standard Plus One Profile 95: This collection has a broader face and double-wall structure for supporting larger pieces. Its 1" wide face can help highlight specific tones in the piece.

  • American Hardwoods: Made from sustainably harvested wood, these frames highlight the inherent beauty of oak, maple, and walnut, contributing rich texture and character to any artwork.
