How do I attach my artwork?

Artwork can be secured using dry-mounting for a permanent bond, hinging with acid-free tape for easy removal, or non-adhesive options like polyester mounting corners and archival strips for smaller items.

Securing Artwork with Adhesives

Dry-Mounting

  • This professional method uses heat-activated adhesive to attach artwork to a backing board. The artwork and adhesive board are placed in a press where pressure is applied by a vacuum.
  • As the temperature rises, the adhesive activates, permanently securing the artwork to the board.
  • While a standard mount is economical, we strongly recommend using an archival mount on preservation board, which is acid-free and can be removed if necessary. Dry mounting is ideal for open-edition prints, posters, and photography.

Hinging with Tape

  • Hinging is suitable for valuable items, allowing for easy removal if needed. Small pieces of tape act as hinges to attach the artwork to the backing board or mat.
  • Use acid-free linen or paper tape, as clear household tape may contain harmful acids.
  • Linen Hinge Tape or Abaca Hinge Tape are available for purchase as a roll or in strips.
  • Tape should be applied to the backside of the artwork to allow it to float and flex within the frame.

Securing Artwork Without Adhesives

Polyester Mounting Corners

  • These archival, pressure-sensitive corners are ideal for securing smaller items like photographs, prints, trading cards, stamps and other downsized items.
  • Simply press the corners onto the mounting board and slide the artwork into place, allowing for natural expansion and contraction without adhesive contact.

Polyester mounting corners are made of clear archival polyester, are acid-free, and contain no harmful plasticizers.

Mounting Strips

  • Archival mounting strips provide a way to attach artwork to a mat or mounting board without adhesive touching the artwork.
  • Attach the strip to the mat or mounting board, then slide the artwork through the Mylar.
