At American Frame, we provide DIY and professional framing services, including canvas float frames. Here’s a step-by-step guide for framing your artwork at our plant or at home.
What is a Canvas Float Frame?
A canvas float frame creates the appearance that your artwork "floats" within the frame, with visible space around the edges of the canvas. This method adds a modern and dynamic effect, enhancing the presentation of your piece.
Step-by-Step Guide to Framing Your Canvas in a Float Frame:
Step 1: Placing the Canvas
- Proper Placement: The first step is to place the canvas within the frame. This requires careful adjustment to ensure even spacing around the artwork.
- Using Foam Core Strips: To maintain even spacing, we use strips of foam core. These are inserted to secure the canvas within the frame, ensuring a consistent distance between the canvas and the frame’s edges.
Step 2: Mounting with Screws
- Pre-Drilled Frames: When you purchase a canvas float frame from American Frame, it comes with pre-drilled holes on the back that are evenly spaced, along with all the necessary hardware included for straightforward assembly.
Step 3: Wiring the Frame
- Distributing Weight: For larger pieces, we wire the canvas around the frame to evenly distribute the weight. This ensures that the bottom corners don’t bear excessive stress, preventing damage over time.
Step 4: Attaching the Hanging Mechanism
- Hanging the Artwork: The hanging mechanism (wire hangers) is drilled in from the back of the frame, ensuring that it remains hidden when viewed from the front. This step ensures that the frame stays securely mounted to the wall.
Step 5: Backing the Frame
- Breathing Room: For oil paintings or original canvases, no paper backing is applied to allow the canvas to breathe. This helps prevent mold or deterioration due to trapped moisture.
Step 6: Final Assembly
- Secure the Frame: The frame is now complete, and your canvas is beautifully showcased within the float frame. We finalize the process by tightening the wire hangers to ensure the piece is ready for display.
